Cedar size

When to trim a cedar hedge

Is there a more interesting way to delineate your property, and thus create privacy, than a cedar hedge? After all, it's a natural and inexpensive way.

However, what a cedar hedge will look like depends on the care it receives. Annual maintenance is essential. However, it is trimmed between the end of June and the end of August. Why is this? Because, during this period, the trees have obtained or nearly obtained their annual growth gain. In other words, avoid having your cedars pruned in the spring or fall. Heat wave periods are not suitable either.

This means that the optimal time interval is a short period of time. So, please proceed as soon as possible to claim our sizeable services. Even better: Why not choose a fixed annual date? You'll see, at Emondage Saint-Constant, we represent a sure value for the annual pruning of your cedar hedge.

The right way to cut

Initially, when the cedars are still young, it is on the side branches that the pruning is focused. This serves to give them full freedom to grow upwards. Once the trees reach the desired height, they are old enough to be able to be pruned.

The shape we recommend is conical. The reason is simple: this is how the tree receives the most light in all its foliage. Its development will benefit from it, and moreover, when heavy snow accumulates on its branches, it will be stronger to cope with it.

It is also recommended to remove only one third of a new shoot. No more, if possible, to give your plant every chance to grow in strength. In special and infrequent situations, we may remove half of it.

You can see that it is better to let specialists do the work. Moreover, an unfortunate act can cause irreparable damage when it is done on a branch that is too old to recover. It is best to avoid such outcomes as much as possible. That's where the sparse spaces in the middle of a hedge come from!

Reasons to have the cedars pruned

You now understand the value of an annual pruning: it allows you to better control how your cedars grow. Any skipped year can result in a result that is difficult to correct. And that, if it is then possible to rectify it. Unfortunately, sometimes we have to make drastic prunings that put the cedar at risk due to mistakes of ignorance. An annual maintenance is the guarantee of a healthy, bushy hedge that looks good. This is the best way to meet your privacy needs.

Training size

On the other hand, one size of training has a different objective, namely, the shape one wishes to give to a large plant. This technique requires to start on young specimens. This is the best time to be able to act on their structure. You understand that when a branch is older, it is less malleable. First of all, its diameter is larger; secondly, it heals less quickly. From then on, the risks of unpleasant consequences increase. Sometimes the tree can die when it is too old.

But why change the shape of a tree? There can be many reasons. For example, it may be because the natural silhouette of a tree is not well proportioned and it is necessary to help fate so that the foliage and roots match in size. In addition, it increases the longevity of a tree. Also, such pruning on fruit trees increases fruit production.

Another common situation for performing a training pruning is when owners would like their tree to grow while creating shade where they want to place relaxation furniture, for example.

However, don't practice this technique if you don't want to! It requires a great deal of skill, both in terms of dexterity and knowledge of the environment, age and species.
